James Bond car, Aston Martin DB5 sells for $6.4M

The Aston Martin DB5, which was popularized by the friendly spy James Bond in the 1964 film "Goldfinger," has been sold at auction houses for $ 6.4 million.
cars with full James Bond modifications, including a Browning .30 caliber machine gun in each fender and slashers mounted on the wheel-hub, were placed under the hammer in Monterey, California, Thursday.

The auction house behind the sale of this car is RM Sotheby's, initially estimating that the car - one of only three surviving examples of the modified DB5 Bond - would take between $ 4 million and $ 6 million. (A 1964 DB5 was used in making the film "Goldfinger" and the next Bond film, "Thunderball," sold for $ 4.6 million in 2010.)

This particular vehicle is one of two built in 1965 to tour the US to promote "Thunderball," and has only had three owners in more than 50 years.
"No other car in history has played a more important role in film and pop culture than Aston Martin DB5," Barney Ruprecht, car specialist at RM Sotheby, said in a press release ahead of the sale.

All Bond modifications are fully functional after full restoration, so the winning bidder will be able to use a smoke screen dispenser, a license plate number and a passenger seat ejection system.

Ahead of Thursday's auction, the car was on display at locations around North America.
In 2018, Aston Martin announced 25 DBa replicas, limited with the same features as the modified Bond model. With a list price of £ 2.75 million ($ 3.5 million), the replica is aimed at wannabe secret agents with cash to burn.
